23 July 2012 | David Fairbairn has won the $30,000 Mosman Art Prize for painting.
He was selected from a field of 736 entrants by judge Anne Flanagan, deputy director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, for his portrait of the artist James Barker.
"Seated figure JB with orange ground is a powerful work where the line never seems to leave the paper until it has captured some intimate current between the artist and the sitter," says Flanagan.
Flanagan also praised the "intense intimacy" of the portrait, the product of an eight-month series of sittings with Barker.
The work has now been acquired for the Mosman Art Gallery collection.
The award exhibition continues at the Mosman Art Gallery in Sydney until 26 August 2012. The public can meet Fairbairn at a morning tea at 10.30am on 29 July 2012.
